Anonymous asked: 1. Would you recommend taking Orgo during the summer? The reason is, I am finishing my sophomore year an I still have Orgo I&II and Physics II to take. 2. I have a B in Cal ad I also received an F in Physics I. I received an F because I couldn't show up to class due to a family emergency and I was involved in an accident which left me with no transportation ad no local buses.I have an A...

This has been one of the best weekends ever, exactly the refresher I needed. Here is a run down:
-Spent Friday night with the family. I played “avengers” with my 5 year old nephew and got to spend time holding my one month old nephew. My sisters and parents were also around and *gasp* we all got along.
-Saturday I went sailing with T and her uncle. This was my first sailing...

I have been killing myself this week. I have taken two exams already, with two more tomorrow. I had several tutoring sessions and presented tonight for the pre-med society. I am hounded by many of my peers, asking me why I am trying so hard when I know I am already in.
I feel like they have the question backwards. Maybe I got into medical school because I am some one who will continue to put...

I would like to throw a shout out to the lovely Marie. She is the wonderful Panera employee who gave me a free salad because I couldn’t decide between a salad or sandwich.
I am still pretty confused about what happened, she just said she would get me the salad if I got the sandwich, and by-golly she did. I am still not sure if this was an attempt to flirt with me or not.
Either way, free...

When I Was Sure I Wanted to Be a Doctor
This is another question I get asked a lot. When were you sure you wanted to be a doctor? It is such a long, arduous process. Why would anyone want to go through it? And how can you be sure enough to give up so much of your life?
The idea of being a doctor formed in my mind slowly. At the time I was working as a computer programmer for a liberal arts college. It was interesting work, and I...

Anonymous asked: You said you hemisected a head today. Was it tough to handle cutting someone's face apart? I don't know, it just always seemed to me like that would be one of the most difficult things to do in a cadaver dissection.

In all fairness, a white mocha is 80% milk and syrup. That said, I can’t explain the caffeine pill dude.

Guess who just fell asleep studying…. after having a venti white mocha… and a caffeine pill.
Yea, it was me.
Damn this caffeine tolerance.
Once this semester is over I am detoxing again.

I hemisected a head for the first time today. That is where you use a saw to cut a midsagittal section down a face and head. It was awesome.
I did pretty good for my first time too, I nailed the median longitudinal fissure. I literally pulled the head apart and did a victory dance in front of the other anatomy instructors.
You have to use you best guess since you can’t really see...

How to Date a Med Student →
Dating a med student? Check out these tips for a “healthy” relationship.
1. Don’t expect to see them. Ever.
2. Accept the fact they will have many affairs. With their books.
3. Learn to hide your “ew, gross” reactions when they tell you all the stuff you never wanted to know about your bodily functions.
4. Support them when they come home after each test, upset because they failed—and gently...

Sometimes I wish I could go back and do this all over. Not because I am unhappy with where I am at, but because I unnecessarily lost a lot of friends along the way. In the process of putting school first I have put a lot of people last. As my time here is ending I can’t help but reminisce about people that have been left along the way.
I have hurt people. I am reminded of that every day...

Anonymous asked: I got rejected/waitlisted at all 3 of the summer research programs I applied to. I'm a sophomore going into junior year and I'm freaking out about how i'm going to get research into my application. It seems like everyone is already ahead of me and I don't know what the heck to do anymore...

Under Pressure
A recent medical school graduate once told me he thought undergrad was filled with more pressure than medical school. “In medical school, I know I am going to be a doctor. The completion rate is in the upper 90%. But in undergrad you are working and working, and that’s for a 50/50 shot of even getting in.” I have not started medical school yet, and so I can’t weigh in...

Anonymous asked: I have taken bio 1&2, Chem 1&2, Cal 1, Physics 1; all at the cc and I will be taking Orgo 1&2 as well as Physics 2 there. I asked a couple of med schools if it will hinder my chances of getting in; So far I had positive feedback's. I intend on transferring to the university in the spring to start on my major. With all that laid out, am I going in the right track? I would like to...

You’re quite awesome to actually disclose this information. Most bloggers/people I’ve seen/come into contact with won’t say.
Well being anonymous helps quite a bit. But I did my best and it got me into medical school. I don’t feel like I have to compete with anyone else. Its silly to get caught up on a number, but you are...

neornithes asked: Hi! This blog is fantastic. A quick question though -- do you ever get the health student paranoia where you get convinced that you're tachycardic or hypoglycemic or some other damn thing because that's what you were last reading about? If so, how do you deal with it?

Anonymous asked: Greetings! I will soon be taking the MCAT in about 12 weeks, and have an idea of the game plan to prepare for it. I was just curious how you prepared for the MCAT, along with your words of advice, any regrets, and maybe a pep talk thrown in there somewhere :)

Grading these anatomy tests is really depressing me. I put a lot of effort into teaching, and my students tell me, and others, that they think I am a good teacher. Some of the students retaking this class claim I am much better than their previous instructors. Yet they are still bombing these exams.
I don’t know what to do.
It is heart breaking. Most of these students aspire to go to...

Academic Gut Check
It seems I have come to think quite a lot of myself this semester. I am already accepted to medical school. My classes are pretty easy. I am well known among the faculty and students of my department. In fact, recently a faculty from another department told me lots of faculty on campus know me for being an outstanding student. All of this sounds positive, but it is not. It has made me...
